Heterometallic Triply‐Bridging Bis‐Borylene Complexes

Triply‐bridging bis‐{hydrido(borylene)} and bis‐borylene species of groups 6, 8 and 9 transition metals are reported. Mild thermolysis of [Fe₂(CO)₉] with an in situ produced intermediate, generated from the low‐temperature reaction of [Cp*WCl₄] (Cp*=η⁵‐C₅Me₅) and [LiBH₄?THF] afforded triply‐bridging bis‐{hydrido(borylene)}, [(μ₃‐BH)₂H₂{Cp*W(CO)₂}₂{Fe(CO)₂}] ( 1 ) and bis‐borylene, [(μ₃‐BH)₂{Cp*W(CO)₂}₂{Fe(CO)₃}] ( 2 ). The chemical bonding analyses of 1 show that the B?H interactions in bis‐{hydrido (borylene)} species is stronger as compared to the M?H ones. Frontier molecular orbital analysis shows a significantly larger energy gap between the HOMO‐LUMO for 2 as compared to 1 . In an attempt to synthesize the ruthenium analogue of 1 , a similar reaction has been performed with [Ru₃(CO)₁₂]. Although we failed to get the bis‐{hydrido(borylene)} species, the reaction afforded triply‐bridging bis‐borylene species [(μ₃‐BH)₂{WCp*(CO)₂}₂{Ru(CO)₃}] ( 2′ ), an analogue of 2 . In search for the isolation of bridging bis‐borylene species of Rh, we have treated [Co₂(CO)₈] with nido‐[(RhCp*)₂(B₃H₇)], which afforded triply‐bridging bis‐borylene species [(μ₃‐BH)₂(RhCp*)₂Co₂(CO)₄(μ‐CO)] ( 3 ). All the compounds have been characterized by means of single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction study; ¹H, ¹¹B, ¹³C NMR spectroscopy; IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.     

Improvements for ground-based remote sensing of atmospheric aerosol properties by additional polarimetric measurements

We discuss the improvements in the aerosol properties characterization resulting from the additional multi-wavelength polarization measurements measured by a new CIMEL polarized sun/sky-photometer, CE318-DP. In order to process direct-sun, sky and polarization measurements in a wide spectral range (340–1640 nm), we developed new calibration methods and strategies, e.g. using the Langley plot method to calibrate both direct-sun irradiance and sky radiance, as well as combining laboratory facilities with a vicarious method to calibrate the polarized sky measurements. For studying the impact of new polarimetric measurements on the retrievals of aerosol properties, we have processed an extensive record of field measurements using an updated Dubovik and King retrieval algorithm [Dubovik O, Sinyuk A, Lapyonok T, Holben BN, Mishchenko MI, et al. Application of spheroid models to account for aerosol particle nonsphericity in remote sensing of desert dust. J Geophys Res 2006;111:D11208.]. A preliminary analysis shows that adding polarization in the inversion can reduce possible errors (notably for about 30% of our field cases) in the fine mode size distribution, real part of refractive index and particle shape parameter retrievals, especially for small particles.     

Towards the synthesis of sulfonamide-based RNA mimetics

The scalable, divergent synthesis of all four monomers required for the preparation of sulfonamide-based RNA mimetics is described. Such mimetics may combine excellent mimicry of the parent RNA with enhanced (bio)chemical robustness and convenient oligomerization. As a proof of principle, a dimer resulting from the monomers is described.     

Synthesis and palladium-catalysed isomerisation of fused polycyclic tetrahydrofurans: efficient and stereoselective one-pot domino construction of functionalised bridged bicyclo[n.2.1] ring systems

A new one-pot domino reaction for a general entry to functionalised bridged bicyclo[n.2.1] ring systems from α ,α’-diactivated cyclic ketones and trans-1,4-dihalides is described. The sequence combines a base promoted C–O cycloalkylation reaction leading to fused polycyclic enol ethers and their in situ palladium-catalysed isomerisation.     

Highly Axial Magnetic Anisotropy in a N3O5 Dysprosium(III) Coordination Environment Generated by a Merocyanine Ligand

A spiropyran‐based switchable ligand isomerizes upon reaction with lanthanide(III) precursors to generate complexes with an unusual N₃O₅ coordination sphere. The air‐stable dysprosium(III) complex shows a hysteresis loop at 2 K and a very strong axial magnetic anisotropy generated by the merocyanine phenolate donor.
